Earthquake Tips, Back-to-School Resources & More!

The summer may seem like it's coming to end for many, especially as Long Beach Unified School District approaches back-to-school. But that doesn't mean the fun is over! We have one more week of 'Movies in the Park,' a free concert featuring 80s tribute band POPGUN ReRun and more events happening in September to look forward to. Southern California has recently experienced several earthquakes which have served as reminders that we must be prepared for the region’s most probable natural disaster. Earthquakes can happen at any time, anywhere and without warning, and the City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications has some preparedness tips to share with you. Earlier this month we announced the $3.6 billion Proposed FY 25 Budget and have hosted several community meetings. We are hosting our last community meeting Monday, August 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at our Billie Jean King Main Library, Teen Space. City Provides Tips to Prepare for an Earthquake The recent earthquakes in nearby El Sereno and Hyland Park as well as in the Kern County community of Lamont serve as reminders that we must be prepared for the region’s most probable natural disaster. Earthquakes can happen at any time, anywhere and without warning, and the City of Long Beach Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications is advising residents to follow the precautions in the the link below to prepare for an earthquake at work, school or home. Click here City of Long Beach Seeks Proposals for Operator of Outdoor Amphitheater As Long Beach continues to grow and thrive as a destination for music, arts and culture, the City of Long Beach released a request for proposals (RFP) led by the Economic Development Department for the operation and management of its highly-anticipated, first-ever amphitheater to be located adjacent to the iconic Queen Mary along the Downtown waterfront. Click here   City of Long Beach Launches First-Ever Space Beach Camp for Young Adults The City of Long Beach Economic Development Department (Department) is partnering with local Space Beach employers and educational institutions to offer an immersive and socially engaging career exploration camp for approximately 30 opportunity youth, or youth ages 16 to 24 who are not working or in school. The innovative program is designed to help build knowledge of aerospace careers, provide related educational and training opportunities, and foster mentorships with leaders in this fast-growing industry. Broadway) RSVP City of Long Beach Explores Opportunity to House Students Experiencing Homelessness Through Tiny Homes The City of Long Beach recently announced that it was shifting the focus of its Tiny Homes project toward housing students experiencing homelessness. The City and Long Beach City College (LBCC) are discussing possible collaborative efforts that could provide needed shelter for some LBCC students. Click here Long Beach Celebrated the Grand Reopening of the Scherer Park Community Center Community members joined the City of Long Beach to celebrate the grand reopening of the Scherer Park Community Center. The Scherer Park Community Center Project included new energy efficient windows, doors, electrical, lighting, roof and HVAC improvements. The center also received new paint, graphics and signage. The park restrooms received new stall partitions, interior and exterior lighting for enhanced safety, new louvers for improved air circulation, and a new drinking fountain. The renovations to both the center, park restrooms and parking lot improved ADA accessibility with the addition of more accessible parking and improved paths of travel around the community center. Read more City Announces Latest Summer Concert at El Dorado Park West Featuring POPGUN ReRun, Hosted by Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will host a free concert featuring POPGUN ReRun, the number one ‘80s tribute band, taking place Friday, Aug. 23, 2024. The concert will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at El Dorado Park West (2760 Studebaker Rd.). Community members are invited to rock out to iconic hits and dance the night away to pop, rock, new wave and funk music. Concert goers are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic dinners to enjoy on the lawn. Read more Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine’s Free After School Programs for Youth Resume August 26 This fall, the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will once again offer programs to engage youth during after school hours. The After School Programs are for children ages 5 to 12 and will take place at varying times per location, weekdays from Aug. 26 through Dec. 20, 2024. Enjoy special interest subjects as well as classes in arts, music, nature, fitness, sports leagues and more available to residents ranging from preschool to older adults. Click here The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to enhance care around and reduce the occurrence of hepatitis B virus infection (HBV) among at-risk populations throughout the city. Read more Long Beach Youth Invited to Apply for the City’s Youth Advisory Council The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) is now accepting applications for the Office of Youth Development’s Youth Advisory Council. The council, now in its third year, is a body of 11 young people who help ensure authentic youth-led engagement in the design, oversight and implementation of the Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan, the Measure US Youth Fund, annual Youth Summit and other systems of positive youth development. Learn more Scholarships for Childcare Tuition! The Long Beach Early Learning Hub (aka “The Hub”), powered by The Mayor’s Fund for Long Beach, proudly announces its Back-to-School Boost Scholarship Program, offering $385,000 to help families with childcare costs. Financial assistance of up to $3,600 for childcare/preschool costs will be awarded per child to families with children ages 0-5 years old based on highest need on a rolling basis throughout August. The Hub and Back to School Boost scholarships were made possible thanks to support from the Long Beach Recovery Act and the Munzer Foundation. Learn more Long Beach’s Annual Ranchos Walk Taking Place Saturday, September 14 The City of Long Beach will host the 6th Annual Ranchos Walk on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024. The community is invited to join in this unique urban hike experience to explore the trail that links Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos. The 9.4-mile scenic route connects the highest points across Long Beach and Signal Hill, including Reservoir Hill, Longview Point at Willow Springs Park, and Hilltop Park in Signal Hill.
