We started this month with nearly three inches of rain, which is more than the historical rainfall for the entire month of February here in Long Beach. In this issue we will provide you updates on our latest efforts in supporting the community during the last storm, as well as give you tips on how to prepare for more expected rainfall. The City's homelessness emergency response efforts continue. We recently celebrated the beginning of renovations for our new Youth Shelter and Navigation Center, the City’s first-ever permanent shelter facility for youth experiencing homelessness, that will offer temporary shelter and supportive services for youth ages 18 to 24. Additionally, we expanded the service area for our Community Crisis Response team, a three-person team that responds to a subset of calls-for-service where mental health support, health education and resource navigation could support the safety and health outcomes for community members at the center of calls. City of Long Beach Issues Rain Advisory Due to Recent Showers Our Long Beach City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis issued a rain advisory for recreational beaches and bays in the City of Long Beach following the rain recently experienced. Recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm. This advisory will be extended if the rain continues. Click here Some Long Beach Swimming Areas Temporarily Closed Due to Sewage Spill Long Beach City Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, ordered all recreational swimming areas at or near Colorado Lagoon and Alamitos Bay in Long Beach temporarily closed for water contact due to sewage spills. State law requires temporary closure and posting at beaches in these situations, out of an abundance of caution, until the water quality meets State requirements. According to a report from the California Office of Emergency Services, over 47,000 gallons of sewage was discharged into Long Beach bay areas in the morning of Feb. 1 as a result of infrastructure challenges experienced by the Los Angeles County Sanitation District during yesterday’s heavy rainfall. A rain advisory, issued by Dr. Davis Feb. 1, is already in place. Click here City of Long Beach Preparing for Two Storm Systems, Urges Residents to Take Precautions The National Weather Service forecasted two storm systems for the Los Angeles/Long Beach region which started Thursday, Feb. 1. The second storm system is predicted for this Sunday, Feb. 4 into Tuesday, Feb. 6. These storms are expected to bring intermittent periods of heavy rain and wind. The City of Long Beach is implementing its inclement weather action plans and will be monitoring and addressing major issues as they occur. Click here City of Long Beach Shares Response Efforts During Recent Storm On Thursday, Feb. 1, Long Beach experienced nearly three inches of rain, which is more than the historical rainfall for the entire month of February. As with any storm, cleanup efforts are underway while City crews also prepare for a second storm series expected to arrive in the Long Beach and LA area Saturday night, Feb. 3. The significant amount of rain experienced over such a short period of time led to localized flooding in some areas of the city which resulted in response from various City departments. Click here Long Beach Public Library Presents “Our History, Our Future,” a Celebration of Black History and Culture Our Long Beach Public Library is proud to announce the launch of "Our History, Our Future," a month-long celebration dedicated to honoring and showcasing the richness of Black history and culture. These vibrant events will feature a series of thought-provoking and inspiring activities that highlight Black love, self-identity, self-care, art and joy within the Black community. Click here City of Long Beach to Begin Construction for Youth Shelter & Navigation Center We recently celebrated the beginning of renovations for our new Youth Shelter and Navigation Center, the City’s first-ever permanent shelter facility for youth experiencing homelessness, that will offer temporary shelter and supportive services for youth ages 18 to 24. This $4.1 million project will add to the City’s suite of temporary housing facilities for people experiencing homelessness. The center will house 12 shelter beds with restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, a kitchenette and lounge area. Young people will be provided with connections to comprehensive social service supports as well as case management on site. Click here Community Crisis Response Team Expands to Downtown Long Beach Our Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services expanded the service area for its Community Crisis Response (CCR) team, a three-person team that responds to a subset of calls-for-service where mental health support, health education and resource navigation could support the safety and health outcomes for community members at the center of calls. The team, which launched its pilot program in July 2023, currently serves West Long Beach. By expanding its service area to include Downtown, CCR will be able to support more of the community while improving safety and quality of life in the Downtown area. Learn more Participate in Long Beach's Donation Drive to Support People Experiencing Homelessness We are still hosting our donation drive to collect a variety of essential physical items to provide to community members experiencing homelessness. We encourage everyone who is able to join the effort by donating needed items. Read more Los Angeles County Now Distributing Vote by Mail Ballots to Long Beach Registered Voters, Drop Boxes Now Available The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk began distributing Vote by Mail ballots for the March 5, 2024, Primary Nominating Election. All registered voters in Los Angeles County, which includes Long Beach, will be mailed a Vote by Mail ballot. Ballots may be returned by mail (no postage required), in person at any Vote Center in Los Angeles County, or at any Vote by Mail Ballot Drop Box. Long Beach voters have 24-hour access to drop boxes at more than 400 participating locations across Los Angeles County, including 17 drop box locations throughout Long Beach. The 17 Long Beach locations include: Bixby Park Community Center (130 Cherry Ave.) Bret Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.) Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Watch here City Provides Help And Hope For Victims Of East Anaheim Plaza Fire It's been a little over year since the entire East Anaheim Plaza fully engulfed in flames leaving 10 businesses completely destroyed. Click here Health Department Vital Records Program Announces Expanded Services Our Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services expanded its services to offer authorized copies of birth and death certificates for births and deaths that occurred in Long Beach within the past five years. Prior to 2024, the department was only able to provide records for events that occurred within the past year. The expanded services will help meet demand and provide better customer service for people seeking records in Long Beach. Click here Our Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services launched a new data dashboard displaying local HIV data regarding people who are newly diagnosed with HIV or currently living with HIV, as well as data regarding people with HIV who died in Long Beach. The dashboard, will be updated quarterly and serve as a platform for providing interactive and timely information to the public. Learn more Long Beach Recovery Act to Fund Business Assistance Program During First Year of Ordinance In an effort to support entrepreneurial and business development opportunities in the city while protecting public health, safety and ADA access, during its Jan. 23, 2024, meeting, the Long Beach City Council approved a new sidewalk vending ordinance. This action creates a path for those who would like to sell food from compact mobile food operations, more commonly known as food carts, or other merchandise. Learn more City of Long Beach Announces Launch of a New Parent Information Workshop Series for Families and Caregivers Our Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services and the Long Beach Public Library partnered on a new series of parent education workshops. The workshops, focused on parents of children from 0 to 5 years old, cover a variety of topics, including special education, early start intervention and mental health. Workshop are taught by local experts who specialize in various fields of early childhood. This initiative aims to ensure Long Beach families experiencing developmental concerns about their child are connected to services in a timely manner. The parent information workshops, which will also serve to connect families to resources, kicked off this January. Each workshop will cover a different topic. Caregivers may attend as many or as few as they would like; no registration is required. Willow St.) Learn more Long Beach Expands First Time Homebuyer Assistance The City of Long Beach is announcing an expansion of the City’s First-Time Homebuyer Assistance Program that now enables income-eligible residents citywide to apply and increases the grant amount from $20,000 up to $25,000. The expansion of this program, which is for first-time, first-generation homebuyers, is intended to enable more Long Beach residents to qualify and receive assistance to purchase their first home in the city. Click here City Seeks Partner to Operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market in Long Beach The City of Long Beach is seeking a partner to implement and operate a Mobile Healthy Food Market in Long Beach. The City launched a Request for Proposals. Qualified organizations are encouraged to submit proposals through the City’s vendor portal, Long Beach Buys, by 11 a.m., on Feb. 8, 2024. The goal of the Mobile Healthy Food Market is to increase access to affordable fresh produce in neighborhoods defined as having poor food access as well as increase opportunities for residents to be connected to other services and resources that address the social determinants of health and improve health outcomes. Click here Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine to Offer a Variety of Classes for Residents This Spring Registration for a variety of new and existing recreation classes offered our Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine starts this Monday, Feb. 5. More than 700 activities in art, music, nature, fitness, special interest subjects, adult sports leagues and aquatics will begin in March and continue through May 2024. Click here City of Long Beach Celebrates Groundbreaking for Junipero Beach Sports Court We recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the Junipero Beach Sports Courts project with a ceremony featuring Mayor Rex Richardson, Vice Mayor Cindy Allen and other City leaders. The Junipero Beach Sports Courts project will expand recreational opportunities at Junipero Beach, located off Ocean Boulevard and Junipero Avenue, and serve as a new coastal amenity for Long Beach residents and visitors. These amenities will include a roller skate area, full basketball court and integrated seating. Learn more Understanding the Tech Equity Gap in Long Beach Our Technology and Innovation Department and the UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies partnered to develop a report titled 'Understanding the Tech Equity Gap in Long Beach.' The report aims to better understand inequities and existing gaps in employment diversity of the technology workforce environment in Long Beach. The findings share recommendations for stakeholders to address existing gaps in employment diversity in the City’s rapidly growing technology sector. Here are some compelling statistics from the report:  Women make up 50.7% of Long Beach residents, however in the technology workforce they make up just 23.5% and earn 3.7% less than the male average annual salary of $110,336. 7.05% of technology workers in Long Beach are Black, while 14.6% of total residents are Black. Hispanic/Latino technology workers receive a salary of $100,441 per year, which is 10.5% less than the salary made by non-Hispanic tech workers. Hispanic/Latino workers make up only 24% of the City’s technology workforce. Learn more Unleaded Aviation Fuel Subsidy Program to Launch at Long Beach Airport In its latest move to accelerate the transition of aviation fuel, also known as avgas, our Long Beach Airport from leaded to unleaded, the City Council approved to implement a new subsidy program to offset unleaded fuel costs for general aviation users.
