Keeping up with Kathryn

Dear Friends,

This week, we marked a significant milestone in our rebuilding efforts. On Wednesday, the first home in Altadena (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-applauds-u-s-army-corps-of-engineers-completion-of-first-private-property-debris-removal-operation-in-altadena/) had debris removed (https://recovery.lacounty.gov/debris-removal/) by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-applauds-debris-removal-launch-in-altadena-by-u-s-army-corps-of-engineers/) . These cleanup efforts prioritize the health and safety of our residents and pave the way for them to rebuild their homes. Thank you to all the residents who opted in (https://lacounty.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/a0578a45ffed444fbc94e7925e8e7d6d) to the Phase 2 debris removal program and to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for taking on Phase 1

The Army Corps' (https://www.usace.army.mil/) results will multiply in the days and weeks to come (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-applauds-u-s-army-corps-of-engineers-completion-of-first-private-property-debris-removal-operation-in-altadena/) . With the support of our federal, state, and local partners, a timely recovery is possible. Margot, the resident whose home was the first to be cleared, said, "I'm so happy for everything to be cleared out. I'm ready for this debris to be removed and to have a new start." Click here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg7RjW2ymwg) to watch a touching video with interviews of some of the residents whose homes are being cleaned up. It's clear that hope is alive and we are on the road to recovery (https://kathrynbarger.lacounty.gov/barger-applauds-debris-removal-launch-in-altadena-by-u-s-army-corps-of-engineers/) .

Best wishes,
Kathryn Barger

Looting and impersonating emergency personnel are both inexcusable crimes, especially in light of the heartbreak, fear, and anger that wildfire survivors have endured. I joined District Attorney Nathan Hochman this week as Assemblymembers Jesse Gabriel, Jacqui Irwin, and Blanca Pacheco announced a bill that would provide law enforcement with better tools to crack down on these crimes.

The residents of Chapman Woods in East Pasadena are deeply engaged and passionate about the well-being of their neighborhood, the San Gabriel Valley, and the County as a whole. I’m always grateful to attend their annual meeting to have a dialogue with these committed neighbors whose advocacy and perspectives I admire so much.

This week marked the start of our first-ever budget hearings. Over the next few weeks, every County department will go before our Board to give a presentation about their budget requests, answer questions, and hear public comment. If you'd like to learn more about each department's proposed budget or plan to testify, check the agenda for each meeting to see which departments are slated to present.
